Polyalphaolefins (PAO) are non-polar synthetic lubricant bases (polymerised oils) classified in group IV according to the API lubricant base categories. PAOs are commonly used in engine oils (also for electric vehicles), hydraulics, compressors, gears and bearings, which operate in extreme temperature environments. They are also used in wind generators and as lubricant bases for grease formulation.

Tackifiers are additives used in lubricants and greases to provide two types of properties. Owing to the chemical bonds between atoms, they can enhance either adhesion to the surfaces on which the lubricant is applied or cohesion within the lubricant itself.
Sulphur-containing additives are used in lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, metalworking fluids and greases to provide extreme pressure (EP) and anti-wear (AW) properties. Their activity depends largely on the sulphur content and the type of sulphur compound.
